Behind the scenes
Helderberg Homebrew Club’s executive committee (EC) is elected by the club members to take responsibility for all the club’s governance and operational requirements. These responsibilities include the interpretation and implementation the Constitution and Bylaws, organising club meetings, competitions, and other relevant activities, merchandising, and membership drives. The EC may co-opt up to three additional EC members with the aim to serve specific functions on the EC and to foster leadership continuity.

Hennie Groenewald
PRESIDENT
I’m a biotechnologist who rediscovered my love of hands-on R&D through homebrewing. I brewed my first beer in 2008 after stumbling upon extract kits in Australia, and only later dove into the addictive world of all-grain brewing. I love the creativity and quality that homebrewing makes possible, and I’m always keen to drink—and share—everything from classic styles to quirky experiments.
In the HHC I found a community of friends who, like me, never tire of talking beer and brewing, and who push, inspire, and motivate each other in our never-ending quest for that perfect pint.

James Melvill
TREASURER
I started brewing around 2011, but things got really grain in 2017 when I joined the best homebrew club. I’m an ale lover and bitter serious about Extra Special Bitter. For an engineer, I take a fairly laid-back, “let the yeast do the work” approach to brewing — which means quality can sometimes be hit or miss, but I definitely make up for it in quantity.
As treasurer, I’m responsible for the club’s finances, merchandising, and membership management.

Rohann Smit
BREWING STEWARD
Designer by day, musician by night, and beer-drinker everywhere in between. I was perfectly happy brewing kit beers until I discovered all-grain brewing right before lockdown—and that changed everything. I was hooked. This hobby brings together friendship, knowledge-sharing and a shared appreciation for the craft of making beer. My wife and I built the Beerchamp app to help homebrew clubs run their competitions, and it’s been an incredible way to meet and learn from brewers and clubs across the country.
As Brewing Steward, I’m responsible for organising and managing our club competitions, the annual league, and our brew days.

Paul Groenewald
EVENTS COORDINATOR
My obsession with homebrewing began in 2008 after a trip to England, where I couldn’t believe how many beer styles existed beyond lagers. I’m one of the founding members of the Helderberg Homebrew Club and the longest-standing active member. I brewed my first beer about 12 years ago, starting with kit brewing, then moving to a cooler-box mashtun, and eventually to modern systems like the Grainfather.
My favourite beer styles are IPAs and European lagers. My go-to watering hole is LilyPatrick, and when I’m not brewing beer, I’m passionate about rugby and braai.
